A Historic Milestone for Canadian Space
Canada’s space ambitions soared to new heights on July 29, 2025, as NordSpace, an Ontario-based aerospace startup, broke ground on Space Launch Complex 02 (SLC-02) at its Atlantic Spaceport Complex (ASX) in St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Labrador. This milestone, announced via LinkedIn, signals the imminent launch of the Taiga rocket, a suborbital vehicle powered by NordSpace’s in-house, 3D-printed Hadfield engines. Scheduled for late August 2025, this will be Canada’s first commercial rocket launch from Canadian soil, a “massive milestone for Canada’s sovereignty and space ambitions,” according to NordSpace CEO Rahul Goel.

The Atlantic Spaceport Complex: A National Asset
The ASX, located on the Burin Peninsula, is designed to support satellite launches for national security, environmental monitoring, and communications. Over the next year, NordSpace will complete construction of SLC-01 and SLC-02 to enable Canada’s first orbital flight attempt by late 2027. A second launch pad will support a European orbital launch vehicle and multiple suborbital rockets, establishing the ASX as critical national infrastructure. “At a time when our sovereignty and security are at stake, the ASX is more important than ever,” Goel stated. A Complex Mission, Masterfully Coordinated
The Taiga launch tests NordSpace’s ability to orchestrate 20+ stakeholders, including Transport Canada, NAV Canada, and the Department of National Defence, while navigating 30+ regulatory hurdles, from environmental assessments to airspace clearances. NordSpace’s vertically integrated approach—designing, manufacturing, and testing 100% of its rocket and launch operations in-house—sets it apart. The Hadfield engines underwent a critical static test in early 2025 at NordSpace’s Canadian Space Research Range in Ontario. LinkedIn

Canada’s Space Industry Contributions
Canada’s space sector supports NordSpace’s efforts through companies like MDA Space, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, a global leader in space robotics and satellite systems. MDA is developing Canadarm3 for NASA’s Lunar Gateway, set to launch in 2026, showcasing Canada’s expertise in mission-critical space technologies. This innovation ecosystem strengthens projects like the ASX. Canadian Space Agency

Beyond Taiga: Future Missions
The Taiga launch paves the way for NordSpace’s roadmap, including the 2026 launch of Terra Nova, a commercial satellite for Earth observation with a planned Edge-AI Imaging system, and expanding its manufacturing facility to support future orbital rockets, positioning Canada to compete in the global space economy. Canada’s Place in the Global Space Race
The ASX aligns with Canada’s broader space goals. In April 2026, CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen will fly on Artemis II, the first Canadian lunar mission, alongside NASA astronauts. The ASX complements Canada’s contributions to Artemis, including Canadarm3, and strengthens national security by enabling domestic launches. Unlike Maritime Launch Services’ Spaceport Nova Scotia, which plans a 2026 orbital launch with client-provided rockets, NordSpace’s fully Canadian approach prioritizes sovereignty. Why It Matters for Canada’s Tech Community
NordSpace’s ASX and Taiga launch mark a turning point for Canada’s space industry, showcasing innovation and sovereignty. Contributions from companies like MDA Space highlight the nation’s collaborative strength. As Canada prepares for Artemis II and the 2026 Terra Nova launch, the ASX positions the country as a leader in the global space economy, inspiring tech enthusiasts to dream big. LinkedIn
